CONVERGE AT THE 5th ANNUAL
BRUIN BHANGRA 2003
Bringing Bhangra and
South Asian culture to Southern California, Bruin Bhangra once again
brings back the beats of dhol (Indian Drum), and the swelling crowds
of enthusiastic fans to the center stage of the community. This
year’s event will take place Sunday, May 26th at the Long Beach
Terrace and is sponsored by the UCLA Bhangra Team and Ziba Beauty
Center, Artesia and Costa Mesa.
The fourth annual show
will showcase ten teams from all over the nation and will include
live performances by Sukhbir at the official after party organized
by Ziba Music International. Sukhbir is one of hottest pop acts
in India, with sales of over 2 million albums worldwide. This is
his second appearance in Los Angeles. His previous engagement was
sold out days before the scheduled date. His attendance at Bruin
Bhangra makes the show and the afterparty one of the hottest tickets
to get in the country.
Originating in May of
1999, Bruin Bhangra has become known as “The West Coast’s Biggest
and Baddest National Bhangra Competition.” The competition is a
wholly student run show of intercollegiate teams coming from all
over California, and this year the entire nation. Teams from UC
San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly
Pomona, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis have all competed. This year teams
from all over the nation will compete for a chance to win a $3000
first place cash prize and in the process display their school pride
and promote their culture.
The performances have become a favorite annual event for both the
audiences attending as well the performers. This exchange of dance
and culture has led to greater unity among South Asian young adults
teaching them important lessons of hard-work and teamwork. School
rivalries and geographic boundaries are blurred in this Olympic-like
event, which joins the performers and the audiences alike for one
common reason: their love for Bhangra and appreciation of South
Asian culture. So whether you are out in the crowd or up on stage
performing, you know everyone will be cheering.
The show’s growing popularity
nationwide has drawn audiences exceeding 2000 people annually. In
2001, Bruin Bhangra hosted the world renowned B21 who presented
the award for first place to UC San Diego’s “The People’s Bhangra.”
This year the show has teamed up with the Ziba family, who has a
long-stranding record of presenting the preeminent South Asian cultural
and music performances and entertainment to Southern California.
The show is expected to have an attendance of 3000 people.
About Bhangra:
Originating in the Northern
Indian state of Punjab, bhangra began as an upbeat folk dance done
by farmers. Bhangra commemorated the coming of the Spring and marked
the birth of the new harvest, a time known as Baisakhi. Bhangra
ushered in a new beginning, a rebirth of the Earth, a means for
farmers and the common people of Northern India to salute the new
season. Today, bhangra survives in different forms and styles all
over the globe. In fact, bhangra has been hailed by many as the
world’s fastest growing dance form. The main instrument used in
bhangra is a large drum-like instrument called the "dhol." Today,
bhangra is celebrated everywhere by everyone – from the radio, to
pop music, and even to college competitions.
